Steamed Tofu With Mince And Spinach [肉碎蒸豆腐]

Steamed Tofu

Another simple tofu dish I like to cook - steamed tofu with mince and spinach. There are several versions I usually cooked - mince with shiitake mushroom, mince with seafood, and mince with preserved vegetables. I am introducing a new ingredient to my boy - wolfberry, so added some into the topping.

As it was meant for John, light seasoning for the topping but I added some chopped garlic and ginger. Not sure if other parents add garlic in toddler's meal but I definitely like it, for its health benefits and aroma. John seemed ok with it, he ate sliced garlic cooked with stir-fried vegetable too.

Steamed Tofu

Ingredients (2-3 servings):
1 tube of Japanese Tofu
80g minced chicken or pork
1 tsp sesame oil
1 tsp light soy sauce
Pinch of ground white pepper (optional)
1 tsp finely chopped garlic
1 tsp finely chopped ginger
1 tsp corn flour + extra for dusting
2 tbsp chopped spinach + extra (optional)
Wolfberries (optional)
Fried shallot slices for garnish (optional)

Methods:
  1. Divide tofu into 6 or 8 pieces, use a spoon and dig a well in the middle of each piece. Set aside for later use.
  2. Mash odd-cut tofu and those dug up from (1), mash and mix together with mince. Add in all other ingredients except fried shallot.
  3. Divide and shape mince into 6 or 8 equal small balls.
  4. Lightly dust each "well" on tofu with corn flour, place a mince ball in it. Sprinkle extra chopped spinach around tofu pieces.
  5. Steam in preheated steamer on medium heat for 10 minutes.
  6. Garnish with fried shallot and drizzle some shallot oil over the top (optional).

  6. This looks like a great dish and your presentation of it is really good too. Just a question, you mentioned that you steamed it using the oven, what oven temperature did you use? I usually steam dishes over the stove top but always willing to try all methods. Thanks.

Sorry for the typo, I steamed it with steamer. I am sure you can steam it in the microwave, I have done that before. Steamed custard in the oven, I think this one can be done too.

    Little Prince's Mummy,
    Thanks!

Appreciate your comment. I have read about that before, not sure how much is too much still. I cook tofu like 3-4 times monthly and in small amount, is that too much. I believe everything moderate is ok.

    kirbie,
    Thanks for dropped by.

Most of us love tofu... are you aware of soya toxic?

  15. I can see some liquid around. it is not mention in the recipe. Please advise

  16. Joanne,
Sorry, didn't realise your comment until a year later!! I think almost all rice cookers in the market now has steaming function.

    Anonymous,
No liquid added in the recipe, it was from the steaming process. You may want to transfer the liquid to a small sauce pan, thicken it with some cornstarch then drizzle over the steamed tofu.
