Glutinous Rice Balls [Happy Winter Solstice Festival]

Glutinious Rice Dumpling

Winter Solstice Festival aka Dongzhi Festival (冬至节) is one of the important festivals celebrated by Chinese around the world. Traditionally, family members gather together on this day making and eating glutinous rice balls (aka glutinous dumpling) which symbolize reunion.

I prepared two rice ball (汤圆) dishes today, one with crushed peanut cookie and another with sweet peanut soup. Rice balls with crushed peanut cookies is the my family tradition, it tastes like Chinese style mochi with crushed peanuts and sugar.

Glutinious Rice Dumpling

Peanut is cooked until very soft, almost melt in the mouth, then add in cooked rice balls just before serving. I used slow cooker for cooking the soup, cooked it overnight on low mode.

It is very easy to make glutinous rice balls, just add warm water and food colouring (optional) into glutinous rice flour then knead into pliable dough. After that make into balls then drop them into a pot of boiling water (add ginger slices and pandan leaves if desired) to cook. Once cooked, they will be floating at the surface.

Love tang yuan - I've never thought of serving it in a peanut soup, that is so smart! Definitely gonna try it, as I love those peanut soups that they serve with deep fried pancakes (in restaurants).
